What do we really care more about?
The Republican Convention was definately interesting what with Sara Palin. The media converage on her is amazing. The papers and news coverage seem to not only focus on her but on her family life and that includes her 17 year old daughter who is pregnant. I feel like the media cares more about that then on what Palin actually has to say and that kind of sucks. I feel the only reason that her daughter's business is out there is because it makes for a good story and makes people feel a little better about themselves and perhaps their own families. While I am not personally a huge fan of McCain I really like Sara Palin. I feel as though she is relateable to the people and there are issues that I do agree with that Sara Palin and McCain spoke about but interms of the media coverage on Palin they not only focus on the issues she spoke about but also incredibly on her pregnant daughter and I that is because people are more likely to pick up a paper that says pregnant 17 year old daughter of running mate to John McCain than a paper that says something about the Republic Convention so the media has no choice but to put a little focus on the story that will sell.

Yes this situation was blown up, yet there is a positive side to everything. One positive is because this incident most people like yourself are saying who cares, and then actually listen to the politician to hear her views. This is obviously a situation that reversed the site of the governor to be a more relate able person than perhaps McCain. The other positive would be the fact that those families that have dealt with the same struggle that the governor is facing right now can say, "hey I know what she is going through...maybe she could help parents in this situation while in office," thus getting more people involved in politics. So yeah I agree who really cares, but then again I'm people care about this because I think that this presidential campaign is an important that everyone should get involved in with U.S. future in the balance.
You asked a very good question, and one that I am sure is on many American's minds: What do we truly care about? As all of the coverage of Sarah Palin unfolded throughout this week, I'd heard some people ask - What is journalism, and what is gossip? Some "gossip" publications like US Weekly gave in-depth details from Bristol's boyfriend's Myspace page, a move that people criticized as "too much". But then again, as a society we want to be fully informed of every detail that relates to politicians and public figures... its just the way we are. Thankfully, in this country we DO have freedom of the press, so even people though some of the coverage was a bit too personal or over-emphasized, the mere fact that reporters can publish almost anything they want to stands as a testament to our nation's liberty.
After McCain accounced Palin as his Vice President choice, the media was in a frenzy to research information on this unexpected Republican running-mate. Perhaps they were desperate to find something wrong with Palin. She has had a good record of standing for her beliefs as well as countering those politicans who have forgotten that they are in their positions for the sole purpose of representing the people. Although it seems that the media was negative in their coverage of Bristol's pregnancy, the reverse occured. Rather than depicting Palin as a mother who let her child run wild, she was portrayed as a caring mother who is pro-life and has passed her values to her 17-year-old daughter. After all, Palin was told she should abort her now 5 month old child with downs syndrome. Similarly, her daughter could have chosen to abort the baby, and avoid the consequences associated with teenage pregnancy; however, Bristol chose life.
