College students are forever drinking. According to statistics we spend about 5.5 billion dollars a year on alcohol. Not only that but Im sure that we all know that most accidents, deaths, sexual assaults, and various other crimes and harrassments are alcohol related. Most of the students that binge drink in college took part in the same activity in high school which only leaves us to wonder... are we going in a circle? Binge drinking is not a good idea, obviously, but to most students it's a past time, a way to hang out with friends. Im not condoning binge drinking at all, but I am however saying that by the time most students get to college they are excited about going to bars and clubs and being able to drink and they HAVE NO IDEA how to control themselves. Maybe some classes should be taught in high school or in college. Perhaps a seminar or two of real life accidents caused by drinking would wake us up but the article doesn't say that. Yes we all know that we can get into car accidents when drunk and get alcohol poisoning when consuming too many Long Island Teas but maybe a class would wake us up a little more.

Students end up in the hospital all the time due to alcohol related accidents. And while most people have the mindset that fraternity and sororities are the main focus for drinking it's also the football fans, and the random parties that are thrown over campuses everywhere. It's not just the athletes but it is also the people in your class that look like they have never had a drink in their life. According to this article everyone is at risk and I agree. We should take responsibility and stop drinking BEFORE we start seeing double.

Your suggestion for classes focusing on the dangers of involvement in binge drinking, drugs, etc. is a good point. Although the consequences of these are addressed in health classes, it seems as if it is not emphasized enough that involvement in these areas can lead to a difficult future.
What are schools doing wrong? What are they doing right?
The above questions would make for a good article.
Yep everyone is at risk! Beware! Binge drinking could happen to you!!! hahaha, but seriously...
Interesting statstics about drinking. I'll be sure to remember them.
In all seriousness binge drinking could easily sneak up on a student. If a student does not know where he stands, he will "end up" on a binge drinking spree.
The idea for classes might work. It might make the possible dangers seem more real, but it's such a part of our culture that it would take a national paradigm shift to change behaviours.
I agree, that over five billion dollars are spent a year on alcohol. However, I do believe that some college and high students use alcohol as a scapegoat for their wrongful actions. Furthermore, there are classes available to educate people about drug and alcohol abuse in high schools, colleges, and in other public places. I feel that peer pressure and curiosity are two reasons people begin routines of bad habits, even though knowing the harmful affects it can cause to their body, family, and life.
This is a timely topic, so I like that you chose it. There are tons of statistics out there regarding how many deaths, assaults, and crimes are caused by alcohol.
You were right when you suggested classes for students. UF (a notorious party school) has established an alcohol education course that is required for its students. Check it out
More schools should do this... it could save lives, grades, and futures.
I really think that this is an issue that should be addressed when parents are raising their children.
From my own personal experience, my parents never had a problem with the topic of drinking. They always said there was nothing wrong with drinking, but there is definitely something wrong when you are not drinking responsibly.
Thats just the way it is with most things. Once they are used in excess, that's where you end up running into problems.
I must agree that people should stop drinking and getting drunk all the time in college because it's fun, but I'm also biased. I have never been a fan of drinking or partying. I do not however believe that having a class will help with these trends though. Schools have clsses, D.A.R.E., health class, guest speakers, TV and news, etc. but it's still not helping. I am afraid that kids and teens will do what they want regardless of the consiquences. Getting drunk is cool, it's adult, it's rebelious, it's a way to loosen up, it's too much of an addiction and temptation. Believe me I wish it wasn't true, but the truth is teenagers are stupid and willing to take the risks. Maybe one day a miracle documentary will be made to fix it! We can only hope.
I liked your posting and the topic you chose. I liked how it affects people our age and how you even tied it into college and school to make it more impactful and obviously aimed towards our class's age group. Good job.
Binge drinking is not a good idea. But I don't see classes helping.
Sex ed doesn't stop teens from having sex. Dare doesn't keep kids off drugs. Why would these classes have any different results?
Unfortunately, in most cases it takes a negative occurrence to be the required slap in the face.
